I tried using room temp air from an air mattress pump, but while that inflates the bag nicely, without any through-air-flow, nothing really happens to the water droplets inside. It filters 4 liters or 1.05 gallons of water via a 0.2 microns hollow fiber filter. This filter system wins because it’s reliable, quick to filter and versatile. Other people online have posted about using hair dryers, but there's too many horror stories of people accidentally melting the bags. The Platypus GravityWorks 4 Liter continues to be the best group camping gravity water filter for 2023. You can hang it to dry a couple days, but you will still have little drops of water all over inside. Getting anything inside it is virtually impossible. The dirty water bag opens completely at one end with a zipper lock, so it is easy to get inside that bag and dry it out.īut the clean water bag has only the one tiny opening at one end, the size and shape of a plastic pop bottle mouth. If you're familiar with the platypus, you'll know that it is based on two large heavy plastic resevoir bags. It's not actually that hard at all, almost all the parts are easy to wash and dry. 2) complaints about drying the clean bag are valid - it takes a while, but I just. The rest of the system gets a 24 hour bleach cycle, then has to be taken apart and thoroughly dried before storage. Shake the remaining water out of the filter, dry everything, and store. The charcoal filter has to be boiled then dried. The only downside is cleaning it for storage. It is simply so quick and easy to get large amounts of fresh water on site, I can't believe I spent so many years pumping! We have used it 5 times now, and really love it. Last year we invested in a Platypus gravity filter. Once a puppy knows a behaviour, don’t repeat the command over and over. (Don’t forget to treat the area with an odour eliminator.) If you catch her in the act, simply clap a few times while saying “AAH-AHH!!” then get her out quickly to the appropriate spot. Instead, crate train her properly to avoid the issue. This will only teach your pup to fear the presence of the mess, causing her to eliminate in hidden spots, such as a closet. Those who free feed puppies never really know how much food gets eaten, because they keep adding to the dish throughout the day.Ī ten-week-old puppy has no idea what you are teaching her when you shove its nose into stool, other than you seem to get mad whenever that mess appears. Predicting when she is hungry is a training tool twenty minutes before mealtime, she’ll do just about anything for that cookie! Finally, feeding at precise times allows you to know exactly how much food she is eating, so you can keep her trim. Also, feeding at precise times creates a stronger food drive in your puppy. By feeding at specific times, you’ll “synchronize” her system, and make housetraining easier. By allowing her to snack all day, you’ll reduce the chances of creating a predictable elimination schedule if she always has food in her system, she will need to go more often. Leaving food down all day for your puppy to munch on is a mistake. Only when her housetraining is reliable should you begin to slowly increase her indoor independence. While indoors, try tethering her to your belt loop with a light, six-foot lead she will accompany you all about the home, yet never be more than six feet away. Prevent this by ensuring that your new pup is either with you, in her crate, or within a fenced enclosure. Every “accident” in the house due to lack of supervision sets your housetraining efforts back. Improper elimination, destroyed clothing or shoes, chewed wiring, or even escape can end up ruining your day and perhaps even hurting her. But if you allow yours to wander your home unsupervised, she will inevitably get into some sort of puppy trouble. Puppies have an unquenchable curiosity about their environment. When you cannot be with her, she should be with someone else, or in the crate.Though she can sleep the night in the crate, it’s best not to leave her in it any longer than six hours overnight, or more than four hours straight during the day. Feed in the crate, and have her sleep in it as well. Too large, and the puppy might eliminate in the back and lie down in the front. It should be tall enough for the puppy to stand in, and just long enough to allow her to turn around. Choose a plastic crate, which gives a more secure, snug sense than does a wire crate. The crate is in fact a great place to feed a puppy she will be able to eat in peace, away from other pets, children, or other distractions. A crate takes advantage of the dog’s innate desire not to soil its sleeping or eating area. Start training right away, day one!ĭogs are denning animals and prefer snug spots in which to eat or rest. Not true! By beginning simple obedience skills such as sit, down, stay, and come, you’ll give her a heads up and create a sense of focus and enthusiasm crucial to a well-mannered pet. Oddly, many people fail to recognize this, thinking that the only training that should occur is housebreaking. Not Starting Basic Training ImmediatelyĪn eight-week-old puppy is completely capable of learning basic obedience commands the moment she walks into your home. Avoid lifelong issues by simply choosing a puppy that has been with its mother and littermates for at least eight weeks-or, better yet, 12 weeks.Ģ. They can become skittish toward strangers and fearful toward other dogs. Puppies who leave too soon (before eight weeks of age) often struggle to learn proper bite inhibition and do not learn to interact normally with dogs or people. Unfortunately, some breeders and shelters allow puppies to leave the litter too soon this short-circuits the social imprinting process and can lead to ingrained problems. During the first eight weeks of a puppy’s life, she receives precious nurturing from her mother and learns invaluable social skills from her littermates. Here are 14 of the most common puppy blunders to avoid: But by avoiding the most common errors, you can increase the odds of enjoying the experience, and mentoring that puppy into adulthood. Housetraining woes, destructive chewing, barking, and other unsettling behaviours can quickly turn those good feelings into frustration and even regret. But without a basic understanding of the do’s and don’ts of puppy raising, things can go sour fast. The arrival of a new puppy can be an exciting, happy time. Times Festival of Books, April 22 and 23 at USC. Don’t forget to save next weekend for the L.A. Phan recruited Eleanor Hurtt, former sous chef of Cassia, to head the kitchen at the spot where, as Breijo writes, “everything costs less than $20.” Plus, notes on the just-opened Mexican spot Bombo in West Hollywood, a new La Morra pizza location in the Valley, a Tacos 1986 in Santa Monica and word that Dear John, the steakhouse project from Hans and Patti Rockenwagner and Josiah Citrin, might be losing its lease. In this week’s Quick Bites column, Stephanie Breijo writes about the long-awaited return of Minh Phan’s Porridge + Puffs. With no plans to travel there soon, she’s soothing her FOMO by focusing her recent eating on meals at some of L.A.’s excellent Japanese restaurants, including ramen at Japonica, onigiri at Rice & Nori and tongue two ways and saba kobujime at Kinjiro, the izakaya I wrote about in last week’s newsletter. Japan was one of the last countries to reopen to tourism after COVID and now Jenn Harris says she keeps hearing about friends and colleagues heading there for vacation. But we still belong in the world.” Armendariz hopes to bring back Chiles Secos in another form, perhaps through digital sales, sometime in the future. I just kind of felt like I would rather bow out gracefully and accept that maybe we don’t belong there anymore. Still, she told Breijo, “Walking around the market now, it’s just not the same place. “It was just time having to run the business and be there every day takes a toll.” “She was ready to retire and nobody could or wanted to keep it going,” Armendariz said. Armendariz told Breijo that despite Lopez’s struggles when the market started bringing in new vendors and restaurants several years back, as Steve Lopez documented in a 2018 column, it was her aunt’s desire to spend time with her family more than gentrification issues that led to the closure. Stephanie Breijo talked with Claudia Armendariz, granddaughter of founder Celestino Lopez and niece to his daughter Rocio Lopez, who took over after her father’s death. But this month, after some 50 years in business in various guises (the moles weren’t added until the 1990s), Chiles Secos left the market. The food was more hit and miss, though he says if you stick with the restaurant’s classics - spicy corn chowder, crab cakes and a smoked salmon pizza that rivals Wolfgang Puck‘s - you’ll be happy.Ĭhiles Secos, marked by its red-and-yellow sign in the middle of downtown L.A.’s Grand Central Market, has been a familiar and comforting presence with its painterly display of dried chiles arranged in bins by color and type, cellophane bags of dried fruits, rows of colorful chewing gum and round cakes of the peanut candy De la Rosa Marzapán, plus, of course, its beloved earth-toned mole pastes imported from Mexico. The restaurant, he says, “remains a rite of passage for a certain set of Angelenos, and an essential part of the evolution of dining in the city.” Kwan Peterson ate several meals at the prime people-watching spot for his review of the celebrity-attracting, flower-festooned “grande dame of scene-y dining.” He was not disappointed, at least with the scene. Of course, if you’re going for an iconic L.A. It may be too early to call it a comeback, but they put together a guide to 14 great lunch spots in the city, from Alta Adams and Destroyer to food hall Citizen Public Market and food editor Daniel Hernandez‘s favorite power lunch spot, the “parking lot-turned-patio” Johnny’s West Adams where the call is pastrami with crinkle fries. But Danielle Dorsey, Jenn Harris, Lucas Kwan Peterson and Betty Hallock make the case that we’re starting to see a shift back to lunch. It’s gotten harder and harder to find a place to meet for lunch in Los Angeles, leading many to wonder if the Hollywood power lunch is on its last legs. It will look like a regular old light switch. With hundreds of plug-in chandelier styles to choose from, theres a look for every room. You just plug the chandelier into the box that comes in this set and attach the remote to the wall using velcro command strips. If you really want to feel like you are living large in a rental, ? you can get a special switch/plug combo that is even dimmable so that you won’t have to unplug your chandelier every time you use it. Screw in the hook at the edge of your wall to attach the chain allowing some swag. Step FourĪttach the black wire of the swag kit to the black wire of the chandelier using the wire nuts provided with the kit. Step ThreeĪttach the swag light kit chain AND the chandelier to the mounting bracket. It is now ready for you to hang the light exactly like you would hang it if there were a power box. Attach the mounting bracket directly to the ceiling stud and screw in the nipple from your light fixture. ? Measure the distance to the nearest plug, like I explained above, giving extra length for the swag of the chain.ĭrill a hole into the ceiling stud for the chandelier nipple that will screw into the mounting bracket. Or it will fall out and go boom… hopefully not on your head. Make certain you are marking it IN A STUD. Mark the location on the ceiling you want the chandelier to hang. You can, of course, adjust the length of each one by snipping the wire and the chain if you need one shorter than those. You need to add a little extra for the swag. We measured the distance from where we wanted the light to hang, over to the wall where a plug is, and then down to the plug. For our antique chandeliers, we always choose the antique brass color. They come in several colors: brushed nickel, polished brass, and antique brass. You need to start by purchasing a swag light kit in whatever length and color of chain you will need. I asked Deb to turn my chandelier into a plug-in so that I could still enjoy it!Īs long as your landlord doesn’t care about hanging pictures, etc, this is how we hang a chandelier without power in the ceiling. I decided I wanted a chandelier over our antique kitchen island (post coming soon on that fabulous piece) in the rental but there is no power there. Deb is at the point she can switch out a light in about five minutes. And, then hang the original fixtures back up in the rental when we leave. Rather than store all of them in boxes, we decided we would hang a few in the rental to enjoy them while we live here. ☹️ It was in our contract to take several of them from the house when we left. We went from the House on Winchester, which had chandeliers in EVERY room to a house without a single ONE. We have some creative ideas as how to keep it the same way since we won’t actually be on Winchester Street anymore. I say “ original” because so many of you have asked what we will do with our business name. We recently moved from the original House on Winchester into a rental house while we build our dream home. I have been compensated by Walmart for this post but, as always, all opinions are my own. This blog post is written in collaboration with Walmart. Is it really necessary to drink wine out of a wine glass? Be honest. It looks amazing and also serves a purpose. I think it is such a cool idea because it is practical art. She has her glasses in a few local shops and also has an Etsy store she set up. She does custom designs and also some of her own. My wife produces and sells painted wine glasses and makes a pretty nice supplemental income doing it. If I had one that was indestructible my problem would be solved. I have a horrible problem with breaking wine glasses. Is there such a thing as an unbreakable wine glass that is not made out of cheap plastic? I really can't taste any difference between glass and plastic glasses full of wine. She asked her if she had anything besides that awful plastic. One customer really turned up her nose at the glasses. She only sells disposable wine glasses, because that is all she can afford to stock. My friend owns a party supply store, but everything in it is pretty inexpensive. I would also think that the flavor of the wine would remain unaffected, since the paint would be only on the outside. November 2, – Handpainted wine glasses would make great gifts. Last year, the host at the party served champagne in rose colored wine glasses, and it looked to be a pretty pink color. The bubbles do rise very well in this type of glass. I don't regularly drink wine, but this is the one time that I actually hold a type of wine glass in my hand. I have had champagne in tall flutes before on New Year's Eve. I've tried several types from different kinds of glasses, and they are all extremely unpleasant. It causes my tongue to pucker on contact, so I don't enjoy the experience at all. To me, wine only has one flavor, and that is bitter. What Are the Pros and Cons of Acrylic Wine Glasses?.How Do I Choose the Best Port Wine Glasses?.What Are the Different Uses of Miniature Wine Glasses?.What Are the Different Types of Rose Wine Glasses?. A lot of people might think, oh well, if I had those achievements, I would move past this. I think the point of the video is to say, however successful you get, there'll always be someone who can elicit that kind of feeling in you.Įspecially interesting to hear that coming from someone, who from the outside, is as successful as you are. Do you know what I mean? It's like, it doesn't matter. If you're surrounded by people who on paper doing better than you in any environment, it could be in LA, it could be in Reading. But yes, it certainly can rub off on you. As well as being a beautiful, wonderful healing place is kind of a weird paradox, I think LA. And I think moving to LA probably didn't help cause everybody here is so driven by success and it's a work town, it's a very success-obsessed and financially-obsessed place. I have definitely contended with that feeling a lot in the past. I don't know if I've a hundred percent completed that game, but I feel as if I reached the boss level of it last year and maybe there's some side quests still to clean up. And there's a quote that you gave around the release of that song, "Comparison really is the thief of joy." Can you tell me about your journey to reaching that point? If indeed you have reached that point? I'm not sure if that's the case. That's kind of about acknowledging your own worth outside of other people. "Say What You Will," which is the first single you released from the album. And then there's also acceptance and there's love and there's, I tried. And I was definitely, when I wrote that song, I was in that head space and there's a little bit frustration and anger in there. And I think because of that, here's me with a slightly different angle on it, but whatever it is, it fucking hurts. I can say that doesn't feel great, but what people describe to me as romantic heartbreak, I'm not sure if I've experienced that. I've kind of been the one to leave relationships in the past. If I'm honest, I haven't experienced heartbreak, not what my friends describe as romantic heartbreak. In your experience does that kind of, the heartbreak from a friendship, does it feel different to a romantic pain? And I think that's kind of unusual in a way and sets this out apart from some of my others. And I think that has been one of the themes of this album is to actually talk about that and to say that, I mean there are love songs on this record, but the ones about heartbreak are not about romantic relationships. I've actually had my heart broken in friendship far more times than in romantic relationships. I was always told, and I say this in the song, "friends that break your heart and they tell you only love can break you, the more you care." What I'm trying to say is, I just grew up with, maybe it was the unspoken knowledge or maybe I inherited it from society or whatever, that it's romantic relationships that can break your heart, anything outside of that is kind of fair game. It's a breakup with a friend, of a certain number of years, like someone who's just so central to your life and it's hard. So what we're saying it is that kind of friendship split. I had my thought changed by people's reaction thinking, oh no, I've got this wrong. Last month Blake sat down with The FADER's David Renshaw to discuss Friends That Break Your Heart, speaking openly about the concept behind his album and why you rarely hear a break-up song about a friendship. It’s a collection of reflective songs that captures an artist who has arrived at a new stage in both his life and creativity. Here he steps away from the immediacy of writing about romantic relationships, as he has done in both warm and desolate tones in the past, looking more widely at relationships with others in his life and attempting to come to terms with them all. This week sees the release of Blake’s fifth studio album, Friends That Break Your Heart. Whether it’s JAY-Z or JPEGMAFIA, James Blake has been right in the middle of it all. In addition to his own work, Blake has proven himself to be a genius collaborator with credits on some of the 21st century’s defining records including Beyoncé’s Lemonade, Kendrick Lamar's Damn, and Frank Ocean’s Blonde. It was a revelatory move that he built on with subsequent albums Overgrown, The Color In Anything, and 2019’s Assume Form. A year later that same electronic innovator shocked the world by revealing himself to be a traditionalist releasing an intimate self-titled debut album featuring sparse piano in place of beats and his vocals entirely untreated. In 2010, when genre terms like “post-dubstep” were bandied around freely, James Blake established himself as an innovative producer with a love of jazz chords and a tendency to mask his own vocals with chopped up ‘90s R&B samples. How did you think we were just going to let it escalate?įS: Well, I'm glad that threat is over. RY: Honestly, darling, we all saw the potential from a mile away. You didn't plan any hijinks for the princess's visit? You put all your effort on the parasprites? TS: So, what else did you have planned this session?ĪJ: Oh, come on. Guess I better get to work on that guest comic, what with the arc ending so soon. We get away, but not a single target was even found in that building. Somehow in two combat rounds (each round is 3 seconds long), the "dragon" flies away in a chopper and all the mooks are attacking us with AK-47s. Static Shock (DC hero) ties up the elevator system, forcing the "dragon" to use the stairwell, which has two armed heroes ready to capture. At the same time, The Great & Powerful Trixie (from MLP) heads up the stairwell to corner the "dragon".Ĥ. Fox McCloud (from Starfox) climbs down the roof stairwell access towards the "dragon". River Song (half time lord) cuts the target building's communication lines. Not a big one, just enough to set the car on fire and get the fire department out.Ģ. Paul (the gray alien) sets off a car bomb two blocks down in front of a hotel. The team knew the "dragon" of the BBEG was in a Shareholder's meeting in a 30-story bank building. No, more like he just sets the derailed train on fire and assumes we'll be happy about watching loot burn. The GM I'm under always derails the derailing plans, but not in any way that gets that train back on the tracks. That is very unfair, especially to the creative types that actually went that route to publish an interesting idea, rather than backdoor through a Tim Taylor abomination.Īs a player, preparing for any kind of upcoming combat situation is largely a waste of time. I know it is wrong to feel this, but I have this instinctive urge to permanently scar anyone that ever tells me they submitted crunch content to the online version of Dragon magazine. The books are bad enough at times, but when you have people bringing in Dragon Magazine content that completely ignores standards set for items (such as the blasting rod, granting heroic tier characters the property of resist 10 to two elemental damage types where the standard is 5) or classes (when every print source for a warlock hexblade has it attack AC, the online variation should not be attacking Reflex). What I don't enjoy is learning that WotC has put all of this crap I never want to see in a game into its online character builder, stuff that makes the guy who picked up the books for quite a few dollars more ask, "Why did I even bother?" I apologize, as I suspect I communicated my point as clearly as the view through a granite cliffside. Twilight Sparkle: …to take out the last parasprite with Magic Missile! Twilight Sparkle: I get an extra standard action, which I use… So now the only remaining parasprite flies off… They’re just minions right now, so they go down instantly. Twilight Sparkle: No, it’s just direct damage.ĭM: Right. Twilight Sparkle: With my standard action and my move action, I use Magic Missile on two of the parasprites! 8 damage each. I activate Wizard’s Fury! It’s a Daily that lets me use Magic Missile as a minor action until the end of the encounter.ĭM: Is it free? Hmm, no, it’s a minor action to use. …Alright, the three parasprites move AFTER Twilight. You’re gonna let them do this?įluttershy: Well, um, I did kind of cause this… and they seem to know what to do, so I trust them…ĭM: Rrrgh. Twilight Sparkle: I’m attacking! Rolling for Initiative.ĭM: Really? You’re gonna make me break out the combat stats this soon?ĭM: Fluttershy. When was Carvey? 1996? So that was in 1992 and I didn’t get hired for SNL that time. **Stephen Colbert, cast member: **Robert Smigel had seen me perform at Second City when he was one of the people scouting for Saturday Night Live. Another year we saw a Second City show and Steve Carell wasn’t there, but his understudy was. So I got to see Farley at Second City and got to see him hired by Lorne. Smigel: When I was a co-producer at SNL I would go in the summertime and scout people. I didn’t get that, but Robert had access to all of the tapes. Jon Glaser, writer: I was working at Second City at the time, this was in ’95, and I had auditioned for Saturday Night Live that summer. The other person who probably made me laugh the hardest from the SNL auditions was Jon Glaser. I can just imagine Lorne Michaels cringing at the Ralph Kramden bit. I guess part of what made me laugh so hard about both of these auditions is how repellent they might have been to the SNL people watching. That was probably the hardest I laughed at anyone’s audition of anything. Smigel: That was his audition, Ralph Kramden taking a dump with a combination of relief and anxiety. **Bill Chott, cast member: **I used to do an impression of Jackie Gleason taking a difficult shit and it used to bring the house down at Second City. We want you to do what you do." At the time, I think ABC sort of hoped I would be really like Carol Burnett. I think that ABC sincerely wooed us and threw lots of money at us saying, "No, no. **Carvey: **There was confusion over who and what I am as a performer. It’s way too funny and specific and kind of obtuse for a mass audience to get. Then the 2011 version of me goes, No it isn’t, it’s on ABC in primetime, and there’s no way it’s going to find an audience. Dana had just come off of SNL and I remember thinking, Oh, this is going to be awesome. **Jon Hamm, Live-Action "Ace," "The Ambiguously Gay Duo": **I’m such a nerd about that stuff. And Disney did buy ABC after we made the deal, which had even more impetus to go more conservative. Once we made that choice, our fate was sealed in not being a long running show. **Carvey: **I really ended up being the only one who sort of thought that we should do it on cable. And ABC was the most aggressive pursuer they were a very hot network and they also promised us a prime timeslot. **Smigel: **One of the biggest guaranteed offers was from CBS, but they were in the basement at the time. In this expansive oral history, 15 years later, the cast and writers-as well as devoted superfans like Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon-take GQ through the absolute genius and the absolute absurdity that was The Dana Carvey Show. Consider: This was the birthplace of "The Ambiguously Gay Duo," soon to be a mainstay on Saturday Night Live-only this was primetime. It also foretold standouts on other shows. Its legacy is that of a cultural oddity and comedy prognosticator, considering its exceptionally talented cast. But today, The Dana Carvey Show has found new life on the Internet-all eight episodes can be viewed on Hulu for free. Saddled with a timeslot following the Tim Allen family favorite Home Improvement, the raunchy first sketch-featuring Carvey as President Bill Clinton breastfeeding a litter of puppies-doomed the show to cancellation before it could air its eighth episode. Not to mention a guy who would go on to write some of the most abstract and beloved films in history-including Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-Charlie Kaufman. And he would soon be armed with what is now a who’s who of comedy names: Robert Smigel, Louis C.K., Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Spike Feresten, 30 Rock showrunner Robert Carlock, Delocated star Jon Glaser, and Community writer and supporting player Dino Stamatopoulos, among many others. Carvey, then 40, was hot off an unprecedented run as one of the most popular cast members in Saturday Night Live history and the success of two Wayne’s World films. In 1996, Dana Carvey could have taken his primetime sketch comedy show, The Dana Carvey Show, to any network he wanted. |
